With its geometric lines and infinite horizons, this new establishment nestled in the south of the island is a veritable balcony over the immensity. We tested.

The opinion of Le Figaro

9/10

The appointment is given… somewhere. A place that is both isolated and accessible, in the heart of lush nature. It is in this idyllic setting that Claire and Valia Gontard, the two sisters behind the project, have taken up residence. Born in Hong Kong, the young women lived in France, Japan, the UK, Australia and Canada before returning to their Indonesian roots. Somewhere is the cradle of all these influences, the meeting place for travelers who, like them, are seduced by a simple life to the rhythm of the ocean. In the common areas with breathtaking views or in the twenty villas bathed in vegetation, the atmosphere is that of a large guest house, with relaxed sophistication. A real favorite.

The situation

10/10

A 45-minute flight or 2 hours by boat from Bali, Lombok is a destination of choice for nature bathing away from the crowds. Located a 40-minute drive from the airport, the hotel is revealed at the end of a rugged path, completely immersed in the greenery facing the bay of Are Guling, where surfers have a field day. Want animation? The town of Kuta, its cafes-restaurants and shops is only 10 minutes away by scooter. The best of both worlds.

The decor

10/10

The arrival leaves the traveler speechless. Somewhere does not have a lobby as such, but a huge open space leading to an infinity pool facing the sea and its green reliefs. Inspired by its environment, the establishment, member of the Design Hotels collection, gives pride of place to local materials, with a predominance of wood. Contemporary codes mingle with Indonesian craftsmanship, from hand-woven rugs to woven banana leaf baskets, upcycled textiles and terracotta lamps. Sober colors and clean lines are the hallmarks of this chic and bohemian decoration, at the forefront of good taste.

The rooms

9/10

To ensure that the construction of the villas is done with respect for the environment, Claire and Valia Gontard have been supported by the sustainable development consulting agency Eco Mantra. Perfectly integrated into nature, the twenty rooms built on the hillside are connected to each other by paths and stairs (quite steep, be warned!). Each has a lounge area, a balcony and a small private swimming pool in green Bali stone, with views of the vegetation and the isolated villages on the other side of the valley. Made-to-measure furniture and beautifully crafted bedding complete this harmonious ensemble. Flawless.

Service and equipment

9/10

It’s hard to get bored at Somewhere. If surfing is the main activity due to the immense diversity of spots that Lombok can boast of, the less adventurous will find their happiness elsewhere. Diving, snorkeling, rafting, golf, sailing, paragliding or yoga: the hotel has woven a network of local partners to offer its customers a wide catalog of activities, at very reasonable prices. Scooters and helmets are also available for rent (directly on site), to explore the surroundings. While waiting for the inauguration of the spa, planned within two years, a masseuse comes to the hotel. On the service side, we salute the kindness and professionalism of this team who bend over backwards to satisfy their guests, always in a relaxed atmosphere.

At the table and at the bar

7/10

At the heart of the hotel’s entertainment, the restaurant is open to locals and passing travelers who mingle with customers in joyful harmony. The menu offers a dozen options, mostly Western (Indonesian cuisine served on request), as well as a daily special menu, depending on the arrivals and the chef’s wishes. The dishes are simple, but well executed. To accompany tasty cocktails made from local fruit and plant resources. At breakfast, an à la carte offer completes a small buffet. Smoothie bowls, eggs benedict or French toast: there’s something for everyone.

Value for money

8/10

With a night offered from €246, Somewhere is in the middle of establishments of the same standing in Indonesia. A price totally justified by the quality of service and benefits. We also welcome the absence of hidden costs and unpleasant surprises at the time of the final bill: activities and drinks are offered at very fair prices. To have fun without blinking.
