The opinion of Le Figaro

9/10

“Le Martinez”, one of the three historic 5-stars on the Croisette, is continuing its transformation. Each year since 2018, the date of its major restoration, brings its share of new features, two “penthouses” in 2021 (whose panoramic view is the most beautiful in the Cannes hotel industry), a garden, a spa in 2022 and for 2023, a new bar which enlarges the lobby and sixteen suites immersed in the luxuriant vegetation of a tropical Eden. And the arrival of a new executive chef, the highly publicized Jean Imbert, succeeding Christian Sinicropi. However, this beautiful Art Deco establishment should not forget its fundamentals, such as a service which sometimes reveals certain weaknesses. There remains the great comfort of the rooms, served by a unique decoration all in fluidity and harmony.

The situation

10/10

On the Croisette, a stone’s throw from the Carlton, facing the beach and the sea. The hotel is only about fifteen minutes (on foot) from the SNCF station, slightly set back, which makes it quite discreet. A quality that makes him appreciated by stars, faithful to the Cannes adage: “We go to the Carlton to tell it, to the Majestic to show off and to the Martinez so that it doesn’t get known”!

The decor

10/10

This is the highlight of the hotel. We owe it to one of the masters of interior design and decoration in France, Pierre-Yves Rochon (PYR), who made the Martinez almost flawless. Everything has been done so that the light serves this Art Deco architecture bathed in light. The cathedral lobby evokes the monumentality of the hotel from the outset: high transparent doors, contemporary chandelier weighing 350 kg in immaculate slats, which streams from a dome, like a sunny waterfall… Marble fireplace enhanced with a canvas of contemporary art, round rugs and a 1930s pedestal table are all elements that the immaculate white environment of the walls brings out like a jewel in a case. On this lobby opens the new bar called Le Sud.

The rooms

9/10

Numbering 410, they can be reached by taking either the elevators or, which is preferable, the historic staircase that starts from the lobby, a small masterpiece of Art Deco, whose wrought iron banister is punctuated by the number of the hotel, one of the elements classified as a historical monument. The midnight blue of the carpet, which covers the floor of the corridors, reproduces palm leaves. Ours, n° 425, view of the sea and the Croisette, opens via a small corridor leading to the bathroom on the left and a real dressing room on the right. The bedroom itself is rather large, white, with a kind of “bow-windows” in which we have installed a contemporary daybed and an Art Deco armchair. Facing the bed, a shelf takes up the wall and supports a large flat screen and a few decorative objects. On the minibar cabinet, which tends to purr a little, is a latest-generation Nespresso and a tea set. It is easy to master the play of light which makes the room very soft, in the evening, when you draw the curtains in a lovely soft blue. The immaculate bathroom, with mirrored door, opens onto the bedroom, allowing natural light to enter. But the opening is closed by a sliding panel to preserve its privacy. One downside, the toilet door butts against the bathroom door, highlighting the only design flaw in this very comfortable room, which enjoys a view of the sea.

Service and equipment

9/10

In the room it is perfect, ensured by a staff in uniform, helpful, discreet and very smiling who disappears in the corridors as you pass and puts the vacuum cleaner off. Big class. Less attentive in the lobby, where the bellboys seem very busy with their laptops and struggle to hurry outside to open your car door. In terms of equipment, the Martinez has offered itself a luxurious Carita spa installed on the garden side and equipped, in addition to treatment cabins, with a hammam which, we regret, is exclusively reserved for customers who take a treatment. A very complete fitness area and a bar for sunny days, complete the set organized around a very beautiful heated swimming pool.

At the table and at the bar

10/10

Martinez’s table, La Palme d’or, is iconic, the best in Cannes, which maintains its two Michelin macaroons. This is where the members of the jury are invited to dinner the day before the opening of the Film Festival. For years, chef Christian Sinicropi has delivered an always daring and inventive cuisine featuring creations with international and Mediterranean flavors, bursting with sunshine and the South. In 2023, a few weeks before the start of the 76th edition, another chef takes over: Jean Imbert.
After the Cheval Blanc in Saint-Barth, the Brando in the Caribbean and the Orient-Express, the starred chef of the Plaza Athénée in Paris will officiate at the tables of the establishment. We owe its decor, not to Pierre-Yves Rochon but to Sybille de Margerie, whose work is at the same level of excellence. New for 2023, the Le Sud bar, open to the lobby, is intended to be the hotel’s new agora where guests of the Martinez meet at any time of day or night. You can have breakfast, a drink or a light snack on the go. On the decorative side, the PYR agency is at work to create a script for this very contemporary multifunction space, like this monumental five-meter-long bottler, lit in a very warm golden color, which gives the shelves an impression of weightlessness. .

Value for money

10/10

The rate for a double room with breakfast varies from €280 (low season) to €1,680 (high season) depending on the category. But in reality for a sea view room, you have to count on average no less than 1000 €. Is it expensive? We are in Cannes and in an iconic palace…
